On February 10, 2010, we began working on this great sampler quilt. Each week on Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 12:30, we will have cutting information and tips on completing approximately 4 of the blocks. We will also work on at least one of the more advanced blocks in our sewing area with someone available to assist with the technique used. The opportunity to learn from each other is a tremendous advantage to doing this type of quilt. It's also great to see how each person chooses fabrics.
We will use this page to communicate with those working on the quilt as well as showing off some of the progress being made. If you have any suggestions or wish to participate, please contact us at (337) 477-9322 or by e-mail at quiltsbayou@bellsouth.net.

Week 1 - We begin. This week we started with a paper pieced block. For some, this was their first attempt at this technique. For others, it was a chance to refresh their skills at paper piecing. The results for all were tremendous. We did decide to work with this technique again next week to reinforce what was learned.

Week 2 - What's Next? As stated above, we'll continue with a focus on paper piecing this week. There are two block to paper piece and two to do traditional piecing. Remember that each of these blocks is only 6-1/2" unfinished, so the fabric pieces are small. If you are coming to sew on Wednesday, you may precut your fabrics for the bottom right hand block as follows:  Background (light) 8 - 2-1/2" squared and 4 - 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles
             Fabric 1 (medium) 4
- 2-1/2" x 4-3/4" rectangles

Fabric 2 (dark) 4 - 3-1/2" x 4-3/4" rectangles
The bottom left block is also paper pieced. You will use various lengths of 2" wide pieces of the two colors.
Week 3 - The adventure continues with some interesting blocks. There is only one paper pieced block this week. We'll work on these blocks and plan out the upcoming weeks. It isn't too late to join in the project. Please contact the store for information.

Week 4 - You'll notice that I decided to start adding my dark sashing to my blocks. I plan to put another sashing that will tie in to the borders. Nothing like making a large quilt even larger! These blocks are a bit more challenging because of the size. I'm glad we have each other to encourage and motivate us to keep going. It isn't too late to join in the project. Please contact the store for information.
Week 5 - This week's focus block is BowTie. Our block pieces will be cut using templates and two pieces will be added with Y-seams. It's one of many blocks using this technique. I'll post pictures of my block as soon as they are finished. There will be other blocks if you aren't ready for this one yet. We've got lots of time ahead of us.

Week 6 - Work on your unfinished blocks.
